Who we are: About The Department

DFLVS is responsible for the development and management of fisheries and livestock subsector in the district. The following are the responsibilities: implementation of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (MFL) policy, Promotion of Fisheries and Livestock Production and Productivity, Promotion of Marketing of Fisheries and Livestock and promotion of Fisheries and livestock extension advisory services. The Department shall be responsible for the implementation of the fisheries and livestock development programes as well as provision of veterinary services in the district through the local authority.

Livestock Development Section

The Livestock Development Section is responsible for implementing livestock development programmes in the district in order to enhance livestock productivity and quality. The section of Livestock Development is one of the major technical unit in the department of Fisheries, Livestock and veterinary services.

To contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth through a productive, competitive, diversified and sustainable livestock sub-sector.

Specific objectives

To create a conducive environment for the sustainable improvement of production and productivity of quality livestock and livestock products that meet market demands.

Vision

To have an efficient, productive, competitive, diversified and sustainable livestock sector that assures household and national food security and increased income generation.

The Section performs the following specific functions:

  • Promote and implement Animal Welfare and Livestock Production programes in order to enhance productivity of the livestock rearing systems.
  • Promote production of indigenous breeds.
  • Manage rangelands and livestock water sources in order to ensure adequate availability of feed and water for livestock.
  • Undertake grading of livestock, livestock products and by-products in order to ensure adherence to quality requirements.
  • Enforce Livestock, Livestock Products and By-products standards in order to ensure compliance.
  • Transfer of appropriate technologies in order to enhance livestock production and value-addition.
  • Maintain a livestock database in order to inform decision making.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders on management of livestock in order to enhance growth of the sub sector.
